Orientation Week: The Yster's Experience

By Claudio Volpato and Bruk Tessera

Posted on 07 February 2011

During the past few months a daunting decision laid heavy on my shoulders: choosing a university to take me from being a boy to the man I am destined to be. I always knew that the right university and hostel would choose me. And so it was. When the acceptance letter from Tukkies and House Boekenhout found its way to Tulbagh, Cape Town, I knew that I would be spending the next 4 years of my life in Pretoria.

My initial feelings of anxiety were quickly replaced with a sense of security, belonging and self. During only a few days we’ve learnt many creeds as well as the importance of the 4 pillars of the Eiffel Tower: pride, brotherhood, tradition and respect. Everything we do, we do as a team, a family and we give our all. Our loyalty and determination to succeed stand as strong and steady as the pillars of the Eiffel Tower.

On Friday, the 28th of January, most of us arrived at this residence called Huis Boekenhout – greeted by the blue and white “Welkom IENKS 2011” sign on the pavement just outside the building. Many of us wondered what this experience would bring as we had never ventured this far away from home without our family. We had some idea that res life was bound to be tough, but we were also told that we would have “the time of our lives”. Both instances were definitely the case! From remembering all our HK’s names, to walking or jogging everywhere, Huis Boekenhout proved that it would test us all to our very limits. However, the new friends we have made and are still making, the allure of our hostel to the ladies residences and the experience of Boekenhout and university life as a whole, have definitely more than made up for it! This is sure to be “the time of our lives”.
