This year, the Departments of Taxation and Accounting joined forces to host the annual prize-giving function that took place at the Hatfield Campus of the University of Pretoria on 10 May 2012. As always, staff members as well as students received awards for their outstanding academic performance in Taxation.

The function commenced with a very inspiring address by Mr Marius Schoeman, the Chief Operating Officer of International Operations at Business Connexion Ltd. Mr Schoeman quoted the American philosopher William James, saying that “most people never run far enough on their first wind to find out they’ve got a second”. In the Department of Taxation, there are truly achievers that do not stop running until they have given it their all.

Congratulations to Liza Coetzee for receiving the prize for the best MCom mini-dissertation, as well as the prize for the best overall performance in the MCom Taxation programme. Congratulations also to Cathy Bailey for being awarded the prizes for the best achievement in a total of three modules – Taxation 213, 310 and 320.

The Department of Taxation would like to thank the sponsors of the function, namely BDO, CMV Accountants, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Exxaro, KPMG, Mervitz Malan, Momentum, PwC, SAIPA and SAIT, for their generous contributions to the evening, without which the celebrations with delicious food and beautiful decorations would have been possible.

The Department of Taxation is looking forward to the same exceptional achievement from its staff and students in the coming year.
