First Years
The Republic of Kollegetehuis takes in about 90 first years annually. The first years are known as "Vreemdelinge" or "Vremies", which translates into "strangers", because they are new residents and are still unknown to the House. The first years stay in the top three corridors in the west wing of the residence. First years stay in double rooms to promote unity and friendship.

Vremies 2009
After a prospective first year receives placement in Kollegetehuis, the University as well as the Minister of Co-operation and development (First years' guardian) of Kollegetehuis, notifies him by letter. The letter will answer any further questions which may arise and contains a list of essentials.
When the first years arrive at Kollege, room placements are done and the welcoming ceremony takes place. The house parents and the executive council are introduced to the first years and their parents during the ceremony. Orientation week follows afterwards, it is a program which is implemented by the university. This program is closely monitored by the university. It gives the first years the opportunity to adapt to their new environment. The EC uses this week to teach the first years the rich history of Kollege and to acquaint them with all the customs.
The first years quickly learn that Kollegetehuis is the best residence and the only true men's residence of the University of Pretoria. At the end of the year, the "vremies" become part of the House, and in their second year they become official citizens of the Republic. Kollege has a very diverse composition of residents, anyone can become a true Kollege man no matter if you play rugby or violin. Mutual respect and participation are the foundation of Kollegetehuis.
The day you set foot out of Kollege, you enter the outside world as a true man with steadfast principles and a Kollege heart. The following is said in Kollege: "Kollege is not a place to stay, it is a lifestyle."
You can contact us any time to make an appointment if you want to visit the residence or if you have any further questions.
