About Us - Magrietjie History
The 26th of March 1982 saw the official opening of House Magrietjie, a ladies residence at the University of Pretoria. Today, 30 years later, Magrietjie has flourished into a residence of excellence, beauty and pride.
Magrietjie is called “home” by more than 320 ladies consisting of First Year students (known as Spikkels), Semis (or second year students), Seniors and a House Committee.
Magrietjie is officially represented by the colour pink, as well as the Magrietjie flower, a pink flower representing femininity, balance, beauty and strength. Magrietjie’s mascot is the famous Maer Grietjie, a young lady designed by Fearika Botha (now Heyns). Maer Grietjie is lively and wilful, not too mischievous or prim-and-proper. She is representative of the balanced, dynamic and fun-loving ladies of Magrietjie.
Magrietjie’s first house parents were Dr. and Mrs. Breedt. Magrietjie is at present being looked after by André and Yolanda Jordaan, both professors at the University of Pretoria.
Magrietjie’s original house song was written by Prof. PJ Gräbe. It was replaced a few years ago by “Mooi Magrietjie”, written by Ds. Marius Swanepoel. An additional English verse was written in 2006 by Elzaan Smuts, of which a part was translated into Sepedi by Rudy Kekana. Both ladies were house members of House Magrietjie.
Magrietjie’s first Primaria was Zelda Stone, previously Primaria of House Madelief (Magrietjie’s neighbouring residence). The Magrietjie Alumni “Bond van Oud-Magrietjies” was established by Poenie Leen, Primaria of 1989-1990.
Magrietjie delivers well-balanced, productive and dynamic young women and many SRC members were raised by Magrietjie. Magrietjie is also known for her beauty as various RAG queens have shown, including the Miss SA Campus 2006 and currently an actress on 7de Laan, Donna-Lee Roberts, as well as Azel van Zyl - RAG queen of 2010. The winner of Miss Hatfield 2008 is also a passionate Magrietjie lady, Bianca Verlinden!
Magrietjie is still blossoming with talent and achievement today. Magrietjie has become a residence that consistently performs excellently in Sport, Academics, Culture, Socials and RAG. Watch this space, as Magrietjie will continue to make each year an unforgettable year, filled with great achievements and exciting events.
