The Madidi tutoring society is a group of Onderstepoort students who are committed to helping the pupils of Ntolo high school to succeed with their education. Madidi is a poor rural area and the school lacks many of the basic facilities and study material others take for granted. The tutoring sessions takes place on Saturday mornings and are not compulsory for the pupils. Because of this, they are typically only attended by a small group of pupils dedicated to improving their marks. Since the societies beginning several years ago the matric pass rate has increased dramatically.
Subjects tutored are English, Maths, Accounting, Biology and Science with sessions typically consisting of a short lecture followed by assisting pupils to complete exercises. At the end of the year the tutors set a practice exam for pupils to take in order to assess their readiness for exams and provide feedback on areas requiring more study. However it's not all work, and highlights of the year's program include the trip to the Pretoria Zoo and to the University's open day. Besides being fun occasions these outings give the kids some exposure to the world and encourage them to plan for life after school. The tutors also play an important role in career guidance counselling.
This project has been embraced by the students of Onderstepoort as it
provides a great opportunity to take the focus off yourself and to help others to succeed.
