The fourth World Human Rights Moot Court Competition was held from 7 to 10 December at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. The objective of the World Human Rights Moot Court Competition is to promote cooperation and collaboration between law faculties from around the world, while also facilitating exchanges between universities from various backgrounds and legal systems.

As part of celebrating the legacy project of the 2010 Japan-South Africa Centenary Celebrations, the Embassy of Japan donated 10 cherry blossom trees to the University of Pretoria?s Hatfield Campus. The donation forms part of the 100 cherry blossom trees donated by the Embassy to various institutions and organisations in South Africa, and symbolises the establishment of official relations between South Africa and Japan dating back to 1910.

The University of Pretoria's Vision 20/20 Clinic based at the Pretoria West Hospital, has acquired an Ophthalmic Examination Equipment which will be used to identify eye deficiencies like cataract. The machine is valued at more than R420 000 and was bought with a donation made by the Japanese Embassy.

Petroné Snyman was crowned the 2011 TuksRag Queen at the Rag Queen Debutants competition held at the University of Pretoria yesterday. The 19-year-old Snyman hails from Edenvale in Johannesburg and is a second year student in BSc Actuarial and Financial Mathematics at the University of Pretoria.

The streets of Pretoria were buzzing with about 7 000 students who were parading and flaunting their colourful floats during the main RAG procession on Saturday 12 February 2011. The event also drew lots of community members who were giving out donations to excited students. At the final judging, this year?s float competition was won by the men?s residence Olympus and the women?s residence Erica. Their float?s theme was about the discovery of electricity.

A PhD Chemical Engineering student at the University of Pretoria, Heinrich Badenhorst, was awarded the first prize of the international Carl Zeiss Nano Image contest, in the category of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The contest had three categories (Scanning Electron Microscopy; Helium Ion Microscopy and the Transmission Electron Microscopy), which had 120 entries from scientists and engineers at different institutions globally.

Three distinguished women at the University of Pretoria are celebrating the Women's month of August by being recognised at this years' South African Women in Science Awards (WISA). Professor Sue Nicolson, is the first runner up in the category of Distinguished Woman Scientist in the Life Sciences. In the newly established category of Distinguished Woman Scholar in Social Sciences or Humanities in this year's WISA, Prof Stella Nkomo won the award and Prof Erika de Wet was the first runner up.

The Department of Social Work and Criminology at the University of Pretoria distances itself fully from the unprofessional and forceful manner in which children on the street have been removed from their parents, as witnessed on the SABC news on Friday, 13 August 2010, and in articles and photos published in newspapers of 14 and 15 August 2010. There is no justification for the extreme levels of trauma that both the children and their parents were exposed to.
