The 21st of February is a significant day for the languages of the world. This day is celebrated throughout the world as International Mother Language Day. The day dates back to 1999, when UNESCO’s General Conference launched it to promote linguistic and cultural diversity. Languages of the world are disappearing at an alarming rate, reducing the rich tapestry of cultural diversity. Researchers have shown that one’s mother language also known as mother tongue, is a key to attaining quality education, preserving cultural heritage and indigenous knowledge and developing self-identity and awareness. Indigenous languages, however, remain an endangered species.

African languages will continue to decline unless they are seen to be important in providing access to economic opportunities. This is the view of Professor Emeritus Vic Webb, head of Linguistics at the University of Pretoria (UP), speaking on International Mother Language Day (Thursday 21 February).

Justice Keletso Kgarume, of the Department of Geology in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Pretoria (UP), was recently awarded a cash prize of R1 000 for being the best geology honours student to attend Venmyn Deloitte and UP’s annual Compliance and Reporting Rules in the Minerals Industry course.

Prof Anske Grobler has been appointed as Head of the Department of Business Management with effect from March 2013.
Prof Grobler obtained a PhD (Marketing Communication) degree in 1986 and has been actively involved in teaching and research at tertiary education institutions since 1980. She held lecturing positions at the University of the Free State and the University of Johannesburg before joining the University of Pretoria.

UP-Tuks's historic victory over Shimlas in Bloemfontein on Monday night may well be the psychological boost that the reigning Varsity Cup champions could be in need of for the North/South battle against Maties in Pretoria on February 25.
It was the first time in three attempts that UP-Tuks managed to beat Shimlas in their backyard, and this only a week after UP-Tuks's first ever win against UCT in Pretoria.
