The UP Water Institute, through the Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology (GGM), has started to work with the Department of Water and Environmental Affairs and the South African Weather Service (SAWS) on fog water collection in high topography rural areas.

In 2011, the Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, once again hosts 30 of Africa's brightest legal minds. These 30 students, from 17 countries across the continent, study towards the LLM (Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa) degree. They spend the first semester of six months at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, before embarking on a second semester at one of the twelve partner universities of the programme across the continent.

"Africa is a continent with enormous natural disaster risks. In comparison with developed countries (like Australia, Japan or USA), which are able to recover from such disasters rather quickly, most of the inhabitants in Africa are very poor and may loose everything when extreme natural hazards like floods, droughts, or earthquakes occur," explains Prof Andrzej Kijko.
