World Human Rights Moot Court: The United Nations celebrations of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 this year included the staging of the first World Human Rights Moot Court Competition, organised with the support of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Judge Navi Pillay was the presiding judge at the moot.

At a meeting of the Academy of Sciences of the Developing World (TWAS) held in Durban in October 2009, Prof Toko Majozi and Prof Bernard Slippers of the University of Pretoria were made TWAS Young Affiliates, while Prof Robin Crewe, Prof Rashid Hassan and Prof Brenda Wingfield, who are also academics at UP, were elected to the fellowship of TWAS.
Their Majesties King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway, flanked by Prof Cheryl de la Rey, Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria and Prof Wiseman Nkuhlu Chancellor of UP.
