The 15th Congress of the Afrikaanse Letterkundevereniging (ALV) will be held in Pretoria from 25 to 27 September. This year’s biennial Congress will be hosted by UNISA’s Department of Afrikaans and Literary Theory. Several members of UP’s Department of Afrikaans will present papers.

In response to SASCOC President, Gideon Sam’s 2009 challenge "12 athletes for 2012", the High Performance Centre (hpc) at the University of Pretoria's Sport Science & Medical Unit, in partnership with the Institute of Sports Research and the Department of Medicine prioritised assistance to potential Olympians and are proud to have been involved in realising the dreams of several athletes and their coaches.

The University of Pretoria (UP) is establishing a Chair in Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) in the Department of Mining Engineering, in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology. As a new focus area for the University, the aim of this Chair, which was inaugurated last night, will be to advance research and teaching in the field of SHE, specific to the mining industry.

The countdown to the London Olympic Games started in earnest following the announcement by the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) of a 112-member provisional team for the Games, which will be held in July and August. The provisional team includes three athletes from Tuks, namely LJ van Zyl, Caster Semenya and Marc Mundell.

Representatives from the 50+20 initiative, supported by the Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership at the University of Pretoria, will present ideas to develop new ways and opportunities for management education to transform and reinvent itself at the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education Global Forum during the RIO+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in June 2012.
Third place for UP student in national Nedbank Traders Trophy

UP student Siyanda Pali ended in third place at the final of the annual Nedbank Traders Trophy Worldwide South Africa competition held at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) on 18 May 2012. Altogether 31 students from eight universities competed against each other and the clock, trading one or more securities in a fictitious market.
