René Smit, a BScHons student in Geoinformatics, won the Esri (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc) Young Scholars Award for her third-year project. The Esri Young Scholars Awards are an Esri initiative to showcase the work of up-and-coming scholars in the geospatial field.
René entered a digital game, Hiking through GIS, which she developed as part of her undergraduate project. To be considered for this award, students were required to submit a full-text academic article to Esri South Africa.
UP awards honorary doctorate to Prof Sampie Terreblanche

The University of Pretoria has awarded an honorary doctorate (DCom, honoris causa) to Prof Sampie Terreblanche during the Universitys Autumn Graduation Ceremonies. Although he could not attend the graduations due to ill health, his honorary doctorate was received by his daughter, Christelle Terreblanche, on his behalf. ‘Prof Sampie Terreblanche has made a lifelong contribution to the economic discipline in South Africa and played a major role in improving our understanding of the political economy and economic history of our country,’ explains Prof Niek Schoeman, from the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences at the University of Pretoria

The University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Theology has received a collection of 224 books from the International Society for Science and Religion (ISSR) Library Project in Cambridge (UK). The books will contribute to debates and research in the fields of science and religion in the Faculty.
Triplet medical doctors graduate from the University of Pretoria

Triplet sisters Elana, Carla and Marli van Heerden graduated together as medical practitioners at the University of Pretoria’s autumn graduation ceremonies.
The sisters were born in Pretoria and matriculated from Helpmekaar College in Johannesburg in 2006. Each of the sisters obtained seven distinctions. In 2007 they registered for the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) programme at the University of Pretoria.

Varsity Cup rugby will never be the same again after UP-Tuks’ resounding 44-5 win against Maties in the 2013 final played at the Danie Craven Stadium on Monday night.
UP-Tuks raised the bar to an all-time high with their record win: the biggest in the six year history of Varsity Cup and the first ever defeat that Maties suffered at home in the play-offs.

Prof Njabulo Simakahle Ndebele added to his impressive list of honorary doctorates and awards this week when he received a Doctor Literatum (honoris causa) from the University of Pretoria (UP).
The accomplished author and academic was inaugurated as Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in November last year. A glance at his curriculum vitae explains the reasons for UP’s Faculty of Humanities bestowing its highest accolade upon Ndebele.
Graduate Research Hub: roadmap to postgraduate success

The Department of Research and Innovation Support (DRIS) introduced a new initiative, namely the Graduate Research Hub, at a function on Thursday, 14 March 2013 for postgraduate students. The function was attended by master’s and doctoral students from various departments at the University.
Professor Burton, Vice-Principal: Research and Postgraduate Education at the University of Pretoria, informed students about the endless opportunities available in the world of academia and reminded them about all that can be achieved with a master’s or doctoral degree.
