“Missing the Point of Multilingualism?”
Prof Stephan Mühr
Posted on 04 Jun 2013
Multilingualism is a widespread phenomenon occurring in numerous societies throughout the world, including South Africa. However, attitudes towards first and second languages are problematic in South Africa. In this context, the envisaged multilingual policy is addressing an urgent, valid and realistic target for national education.
It seems logical to assume that sociocultural cohesion in South Africa would benefit greatly if its overall population were fluent in at least three of its 11 official languages. A policy objective to that effect seems feasible for South Africa, given the considerable body of international research that has taken a favourable view of the prospects for successful educational implementation of multilingual policy that is mother-tongue referenced.
