Community Engagement

More about the Department of Community Engagement

In 2006, the University appointed a Vice-Principal to take charge of its commitment to integrate community engagement into the core business of the institution, alongside teaching and learning, and research. In that same year, the University decided to establish a Department of Community Engagement to operationalise its commitment to the domain. A Director: Community Engagement was appointed in 2007.

The Department of Community Engagement comprises two divisions. Community Engagement Programmes and Projects (CEPP) is outwardly focused to engage with communities and service providers. Curricular and Research-Related Community Engagement (CRCE) is inwardly focused and aims to embed community engagement as part of the academic endeavours of the University community.

A Senate Community Engagement Committee, chaired by the Vice-Principal: Community Engagement, has been established and mandated to implement the community engagement policy of the University. A Community Engagement Forum, comprising representatives of all the faculties, support service departments and other entities, oversees the operationalisation of the University’s community engagement policy. It is expected that each faculty and department (academic and support service departments) will eventually have a coordinator and committee to oversee and implement the community engagement initiatives in its domain.
