Professional photographer and lecturer from Vega, Celeste Mckenzie, presented the five hands-on workshops throughout the year and judged the final competition.

“Vergeet-my-nie” ladies hostel, or “Die Fant” as it was previously known, was built according to plans of the Department of Public Works for the amount of £18 746. It was completed in May 1926 and the official opening was on a Friday afternoon in September of that year.

If one looks at the bustling and sprawling campus today, it is hard to image that when the Transvaal University College (TUC) opened its doors in February 1908, there was a grand total of 32 students, three lecturers and four professors. A legacy of these early days is the affectionately used acronym Tuks or Tukkies.

A photo book design expert will be on hand to show you how to create backgrounds, frames and special inserts to capture your photographic memories in a specialist way. South African Chinese commemorate Dignity Day

The Chinese community of South Africa celebrated Dignity Day on 17 June. Professor Karen Harris of the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies was invited to address the gathering which marked the fifth anniversary of the historic court case that recognised the South African Chinese as having been historically disadvantaged under apartheid and before. Prof Harris’s on-going research on the South African Chinese over the past two decades - along with her doctoral thesis - were used as part of the evidence in the 2008 court submission.

The Faculty of Humanities of the University of Pretoria was recently represented by two academic staff members at the Atlas Africa conference in Kigali, Rwanda. Mr Richard Wyllie (Department of Historical and Heritage Studies) and Professor Chris Boonzaaier (Department of Anthropology and Archaeology) both presented papers.

For the first time in its history, the eighth bi-annual event was hosted by the Rwanda Tourism University College (RTUC) from 3 to 5 June 2013.

Tourism research knows no boundaries

Representatives from the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies and the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology were invited to present their research findings of a study at a Research Colloquium of the National Department of Tourism (NDT) on 12 March 2013 in Johannesburg.

This signified the completion of the first phase of a research project entitled, ‘Understanding the Concept of Cross-Border Guiding in Southern Africa’ which was commissioned by the NDT.
