Winner UP Archives/Q-Photo photographic competition: Oan de Waal
This year the UP Archives, together with Q-Photo and Vega, celebrated a decade of presenting a very successful collaborative photographic project.
UP students and staff again attended workshops held in each quarter which generated a number of photographs and now forms part of the UP Archives Q-Photo collection of campus life. Professional photographer Celest Mckenzie presented the hands-on workshops, assessed the students’ submissions and then judged the final competition. Students were awarded prizes to the total value of just under R50 000.00.
The first prize of R10 000.00 worth of photographic equipment as well as a photographic course from Vega worth R10 000, was awarded to Oan de Waal for his innovative use of filters in a night composition of the LC de Villiers Sport Centre. The 2nd prize of R5000 went to last year’s winner, Johannes Welman, who captured an UP zoology and entomology specimen. The 3rd prize was won by Tanja Schmid, who’s brilliant distortion of the UP emblem on a pencil, highlights the high quality and creative output of the participants work.
The UP Archives’ Best Performance Award was given to Eleanor Bron who, although a first time entrant to the competition, was chosen as part of the top ten in each workshop. This year the People’s choice award were introduced where students on the Q-Photo facebook page could select their winner. Jandre Potgieter won the 500 jumbo print voucher that was sponsored by QPhoto.
