Computer-based Testing

CBT at the University of Pretoria is a priority due to high demand. It has become an important component of the assessment strategy of many academic departments. Due to large student groups and the workload on lecturers, the use of CBT has increased steadily over the past ten years. In this time, CBT has become an integral part of the assessment strategies of many academic departments.

The custom-built Umfundi computer-based testing system was formally implemented at all the computer-based testing centres on the different campuses during 2007. Instructional designers from the Department for Education Innovation worked very closely together with an outside contractor to develop this system, based on the needs of lecturers and students of the University of Pretoria

CBT is used extensively for both formative and summative assessment. In addition to Umfundi, two other systems that are also used, namely the clickUP Quiz tool (WebCT) and CompAssess (computer literacy testing).

The Department for Education Innovation provides assistance and training with regard to the use of this technology, creating applicable questions and interpreting the statistical analysis.
