Petrus du Plessis, captain of Maroela.
Tuks’ representative in the FNB Varsity Cup hostel competition, Maroela, will have their first crack at the championships trophy on Saturday when they play Pukke’s Over de Voor at Coca-Cola Park in Johannesburg.
“We came second last year, which was not bad for a first try. This season our aim is to go one better and become the new champions,” said coach Etienne van der Merwe.
He was encouraged by how hard every player worked in the off-season. At the first training session of the season it was evident that the players were bigger, stronger and fitter than last year.
“I can safely say we are far better prepared that has already shown in the way our fitness and mental toughness came through in the Lyceum knockout league. Sonop asked a lot of questions in the final, but we passed this test.
“We never say no to any trophy, but also know than we can and must improve if want to take Over de Voor (Pukke) head on. Our discipline at the breakdowns was not on par and we will always have to work on our ball retention, said Van der Merwe.
The game against Over de Voor is the curtain raiser for the Super 15 clash between the Lions and Bulls.
