Shot-putter Orazio Cremona’s second-round put of 19,19 m earned him a silver medal on Day 1 of the CAA African Championships that was held in Benin. It was an improvement on his performance in 2010, when he received a bronze medal. It was the first medal for Tuks at this event.

In other events that took place on Day 1, Hannes Dreyer failed to proceed to the next round in the 100 m for men after sustaining a slight hamstring injury.

All the Tuks athletes participating in the men’s 400 m event proceeded to the next round. Willie de Beer finished third in his heat in a time of 46,80 seconds, and in the fifth heat Oscar Pistorius claimed second place  in a time of 46,32 seconds.

As far as the women were concerned, Estie Wittstock solidified her place in the next round of the 400 m in a time of 53,58 seconds when she finished fourth in her heat, and Claudia Viljoen advanced to the 100 m hurdles final when she finished her heat in a time of  14,49 seconds.

The CAA African Championships have been marred by torrential rains that caused many events to have been postponed until Day 2.
