The countdown to the London Olympic Games started in earnest following the announcement by the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) of a 112-member provisional team for the Games, which will be held in July and August. The provisional team includes three athletes from Tuks, namely LJ van Zyl, Caster Semenya and Marc Mundell.
Van Zyl and Semenya’s selection was based on their medal-winning performances during the IAAF World Championships held in Daego, Korea last year, as well as the fact that they had both met the qualifying standards during the season. Mundell’s outstanding performance a few weeks ago, when he participated in the IAAF World Race Walking Cup in Saransk, Russia, where he shattered his own SA record and beat the African record in the 50 km walk, ensured his inclusion in the team.
Sascoc announced that athletes not yet in the team would have until the end of June to add their names to the final list for the SA Olympic squad. Currently, five other possible contenders from Tuks are participating in athletics events in Europe. The final team will be announced in July.
