Marc Mundell not only qualified for the Olympic Games in the 50km at the World Race Walking Cup in Saransk, Russia on Sunday, 13 May, but also improved his own South African record, crossing the line in 3:57:57.

He became the fifth Tukkies athlete to qualify for the Olympic Games in London when he shattered his own SA record and also only the second African athlete to finish the gruelling 50km walk under four hours. At the same time, he also bettered the African record of 3:58:44 that was set over this distance in 2007.

In addition, Mundell improved his own previous record of 4:04:54 (Zittau, Germany 25 April 2009) and fulfilled SASCOC and Athletics South Africa’s qualifying criteria (3:59:00) for race walkers, who only have to qualify only once at an international meeting.
