Minimum requirements -  Academic staff member of the University of Pretoria
-  HOD's involved in the evaluation of teaching and/or 
-  a member of a promotion committee
Purpose of programme In the current Recruitment, Selection and Promotion
Policy of the University the prominence of the teaching
role of lecturers are acknowledged. Following a senate
 decision in 2008, teaching portfolios will be required
in the application for promotion as from 2010.

This programme aims at guiding and supporting Heads
of Department and Promotion Committee Members in
terms of the evaluation of teaching through portfolios.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the programme participants should be able to:
  • explain the purpose of a personal teaching portfolio as a tool for recording/representing, reflecting on and evaluating teaching and its impact on learning;
  • identify the different aspects of the teaching role of the lecturer within the context of optimising student learning;
  • interpret relevant University Documents in terms of the evaluation of teaching;
  • recognise and critically consider appropriate sources of evidence and feedback demonstrating that the required outcomes for teaching in higher education have been met;
  • assess a lecturer’s reflection on his/her teaching practice;
  • critically assess teaching practice as reflected in a teaching portfolio against the criteria for the evaluation of teaching effectiveness; and
  • use electronic tools to compile a draft portfolio.
