Elite scholarships administered by the Client Service Centre (ISD)

The International Students Division is responsible for administrating the application processes of four prestige scholarship schemes, which require institutional nomination. It is important to note that there are more scholarship schemes administered by other University departments and that information about them are obtainable from the departments concerned.

 These scholarship opportunities allows a registered UP student to complete a postgraduate degree abroad and in some cases at home.

 Scholarships 

·         The United Kingdom Commonwealth Scholarship Student and Staff Awards

·         The New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan

·         The University of Pretoria Commonwealth Doctoral and Postdoctoral Scholarship

·         The Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship

 Responsibilities of the ISD with regard to the administration of these scholarships are 

·         raising awareness by marketing of the scholarship in various ways to registered students;

·         disseminating information to all stakeholders;

·         serving as a point of application;

·         answering queries and providing information, telephonically, by email and face to face;

·         processing, capturing and storing application data;

·         preparing documentation to be sent to the next level of selection;

·         liaising with the scholarship-granting organisations and intermediaries on various levels;

·         communicating with applicants on the status and outcome of their application; and

·         serving as secretariat to the Institutional Nominations Committee. 

Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan 

The Plan provides a framework through which governments in Commonwealth countries can offer educational awards to citizens of other member states. It is entirely up to each individual country how many awards it will contribute (if any), and to which countries they will be offered. In practice the majority of awards are for conventional postgraduate study. Categories of award currently offered include master's, doctoral, split-site doctoral and postdoctoral.  

United Kingdom Commonwealth Scholarship Student Awards (South African citizens only)

Since their inception in 1959, some 25 000 individuals have benefited from the award of Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships to pursue advanced academic study in other Commonwealth countries. About two-thirds of awards have been tenable in the United Kingdom. The vast majority of award holders have returned to make a significant contribution to their home countries, in many cases at the highest level, making the award scheme one of the largest and most prestigious in the world. Awards are tenable at any approved UK university or higher education institution. UP may nominate 8 students and there are 45 scholarships available nationally.

 Application process

·         Online application which is printed and handed in at the ISD together with supporting documentation, which includes an academic record, certificates, reference letters and proof of identification.

·         Recommendation by head of department. 

Selection process

·         Institutional level – Selection by the Institutional Nominations Committee (INC).

·         National level – Selection by Higher Education South Africa (HESA).

·         International level – Selection by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC).
 

Unite United Kingdom Commonwealth Scholarship Staff Awards (South African citizens only)

These awards are offered to full-time employees of the University of Pretoria and awards are tenable at any approved UK university or higher education institution for a specific programme of academic collaboration, designed to enhance teaching and future research capabilities and are not restricted to particular subject areas. UP may nominate one staff member.

·         split-site doctoral

 

Application process

·       Online application which is printed and handed in at the ISD together with supporting documentation, which includes an academic record, certificates, reference letters and proof of identification.

·         Recommendation by head of department.

·         Confirmation that staff member will still be employed by the University on return to the country.

 Selection process

·         Institutional level – Selection by the Institutional Nominations Committee (INC).

·         International level – Selection by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC).

 

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (South African citizens only)

The purpose of this Commonwealth Scholarship scheme is for candidates from targeted developing countries to gain knowledge and skills that will contribute to their home country’s human resource development needs. Scholarship recipients are required to return to their home country on completion of their scholarship to work for a minimum period of two years in order to achieve this. UP may nominate one student for this award.

Scholarships are awarded in agreed priority sectors to meet countries’ or regions’ human resource development needs and training priorities, as set by NZAID and nominating authorities (as outlined, wherever possible, in countries’ National Strategic Development Plans and Human Resources Planning Frameworks).  

Application process

·        Paper-based application to be collected from and returned to the ISD, together with supporting documentation, which includes an academic record, certificates, reference letters and proof of identification.

·         Recommendation by head of department. 

 Selection process

·         Institutional level - Selection by the Institutional Nominations Committee (INC).

·         National level - Selection by Higher Education South Africa (HESA).

·         International level - Selection by the New Zealand International Aid and Development Agency (NZAID). 

University of Pretoria Commonwealth Doctoral Scholarship (citizens from Commonwealth countries, excluding South Africa)

As part of an initiative by the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the University of Pretoria has made funds available for two doctoral scholarships for students from Commonwealth countries (excluding South African students). These awards are only tenable at the University of Pretoria. 

Categories of award

·         doctoral

 Application process

·         Electronic copy of the International Application Form which is printed and emailed back or returned to the ISD and proposed supervisor, together with supporting documentation, which includes an academic record, certificates, reference letters, proof of identification and research outline.

·         Agreement in principle from an academic supervisor at UP that the candidate can work under their supervision. 

Selection process

·        Departmental level – Selection by the head of the academic department that the student is applying to.

·         Institutional level - Selection by the Institutional Nominations Committee (INC). 

University of Pretoria Commonwealth Postdoctoral Scholarship (citizens from Commonwealth countries, excluding South Africa)

The University of Pretoria regards itself as a research-intensive university. Hence, it is seeking candidates for postdoctoral research who will make a significant contribution to its research endeavours. As part of an initiative by the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the University of Pretoria has made funds available for one postdoctoral scholarship for a citizen coming from a Commonwealth country (excluding South African citizens). These awards are only tenable at the University of Pretoria.

Mand Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship (citizens from African countries only)

 

Intro  Introduction 

        The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship is the flagship programme of the Mandela Rhodes Foundation – an organisation founded in 2002 as a partnership between the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Rhodes Trust. The aim of this organisation is to build exceptional leadership capacity in Africa.

            Unlike strictly academic scholarships, the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship looks at the holistic character of applicants and their suitability under four key principles: Educational excellence, leadership potential, commitment to reconciliation and engagement with social entrepreneurship.

Application process

·         Paper-based application to be collected from faculty administration or the office of the dean and returned, together with supporting documentation, which includes an academic record, certificates, reference letters and proof of identification.

·         Once two appropriate candidates have been identified the application pack is forwarded to the ISD for processing.

 

SelecSelection process

·         Faculty level – Faculties arrange an internal screening of candidates and supply two nominations per faculty.

·         Institutional level – Selection by the Institutional Nominations Committee (INC).

·         National level – Selection by the Mandela Rhodes Foundation (MRF).
