International Literacy Day is celebrated on 8 September annually, after being declared by Unesco in 1965. Dr Nkidi Phatudi, lecturer in the Department of Early Childhood Education, helped arrange a literacy day at Itireleng Primary School in Temba, Hammanskraal, and brought Pearson Publishers to the school.

The goal of this ‘Platinum Afrikaans Huistaal’ series for Afrikaans is to assist teachers in such a way that learners will be able to successfully understand and learn Afrikaans. The series abides by all requirements of the National Curriculum and Assessment Policy of the Department of Basic Education.
