Alumni honoured with Laureate Awards 

The TuksAlumni Association of the University of Pretoria presented the prestigious Laureate Award to eleven of its top alumni and other achievers at a gala function at the Rembrandt Hall on the LC de Villiers sports grounds on 15 November 2008. This is the highest award that can be made to an alumnus or friend of the University.  This year’s recipients were as follows:   

  • Dr Liesbeth Botha, Chairperson: South African Intellectual Property Fund Investment Committee and former Executive Director: Innovation and Commercialisation, University of Stellenbosch, Executive Director: Materials Science and Manufacturing: CSIR
  •  Mr Kennedy Bungane, Chairperson: Credit Suisse Standard Securities and Deputy Chief Executive of Corporate and Investment Banking South Africa
  • Ms Anati Canca, Executive Director of Technology Transfer at the Agricultural Research Council (ARC)
  • Prof Chabani Manganyi, former Vice-Principal of UP, researcher and clinical psychologist and the current Chairperson of the Council on Higher Education
  • Dr Cival Mills, medical researcher and holder of two patents
  • Ms Futhi Mtoba, Chairperson of the UP Council, Chartered Accountant and Chairperson of Deloitte Southern Africa
  • Mr Roland Röhrs, Group Executive Head: Dorbyl Limited
  • Mr Ben Schoeman, musician and winner of the 2008 Unisa International Piano Competition
  •  Ms Elizabeth Steijn, former Head: Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool, Pretoria and pioneer in institutional teaching in her time 
  • Prof Andries Terblanché, Chairperson: KPMG’s Financial Services (Australia) and business advisor  
  • Mr Alec Wapnick, businessman, property developer and art collector 


2008 LAUREATE RECIPIENTS: (Front): Prof Chabani Manganyi, Ms Futhi Mtoba, Ms Elizabeth Steijn and Dr Cival Mills. (Back): Mr Roland Röhrs, Ms Anati Canca, Mr Kennedy Bungani, Mr Alex Wapnick, Prof Liebeth Botha, Prof Calie Pistorius (Vice-Chancellor and Principal) and Dr Piet Botha (Chairperson: TuksAlumni Board).  Absent: Dr Andries Terblanché & Mr  Ben Schoeman.

Guests were welcomed at the UP Sport Centre with an interesting display of the theme
