CRITERIA FOR THE ADJUDICATION OF NOMINATIONS

BACKGROUND

During 1974 the Alumni Association of the University of Pretoria (Bond van Oudstudente) awarded the first Laureate Awards to outstanding alumni of this University. The Board of TuksAlumni still awards the Laureate Award to meritorious alumni and friends of UP today.

The motivation for the introduction of the Laureate Award is:

*       To allow alumni to honour outstanding fellow Alumni for their excellent contributions in numerous fields.
*       To honour persons of merit, other than alumni, (friends of UP) who have also excelled in their respective endeavours, contributing to the University of Pretoria.
*       To honour outstanding alumni under the age of 35 years already with distinguishing achievements.

As the three awards are of equal value, the existing adjudication model will be applied with consideration for each specific category. No differentiation will, therefore, be made between the three categories when awarding the Laureates.

This adjudication is done according to set criteria accepted and approved by both the Board and members of TuksAlumni. The Laureate Awards are approved by the TuksAlumni Board.  The Board may request persons who nominate and/or second to motivate their candidate (s) to the Executive Management of the TuksAlumni Board.

CRITERIA

The following criteria are applied:
  •       An Alumnus/na is a member of the Convocation of the University of Pretoria. A friend of UP is or was involved with UP in some or other way.
  •            The Alumnus/na/friend is formally nominated on the prescribed nomination form, indicating the category of the nomination.  For various practical and other reasons, the nominee may not be aware of the nomination.
  •             Both the nominator and the seconder are to sign the nomination form.
  •            The completed nomination form is to be accompanied by a comprehensive curriculum vitae of the candidate with special reference to the aspects of adjudication.
  •            The nomination must be received by the TuksAlumni Office before or on the due date.
  •            All the nominations are discussed and adjudicated according to the approved model during a Executive Management Meeting of the TuksAlumni Board. Versatility is taken into account when adjudicating nominations. All nominations will thereafter be presented to a full meeting of the Board of the TuksAlumni for approval.
  •           The Laureate Award is not an academic nor University award but aknowledges the achievements of meritorious alumni (and friends of UP) and is awarded by the TuksAlumni Board.
  •            The evaluation committee (the Executive of the TuksAlumni Board) takes the following key performance areas into consideration:
  •  International achievements and involvement
  • Is the person acknowledged on international level?
  •  National achievements and involvement
  • Is the person known on national level / recognisable/ or is he/she acknowledged country-wide for his/her work (e.g. Head of national body, organisation, institution)?

  •  Involvement with the University of Pretoria and / or alumni activities
