Innovation and creativity were on display during the 2011 Project Day held by the third-year Informatics students at the IT Building on Thursday last week. Twelve groups of students presented their final projects to fellow students, industry representatives, parents and other interested persons.

The third-year projects are the highlight of the students’ studies and the standard of the projects is very high. Each group was given a real-life client and had to design and develop a fully-fledged working business computer system suitable for storing and maintaining their client’s information.

Marks were awarded to each group and the winners were announced by the Head of Department of Informatics, Prof Alta van der Merwe. She congratulated all the students who had participated in the competition and also gave credit to the students’ parents for their unwavering support. “You have learned a lot and have accomplished something, and that already makes you a winner. I am sure that you are going to be very successful in life after this”, said Prof van der Merwe.

The winners in the six categories were as follows:

Best Documentation 2011
Group 8 – Celerity (Ian Joubert, Maryke Nel, Katrin Vaskes, Devan Ellett)

Best Systems 2011
Group 9 – BIT Systems (Koos le Roux, Johann van Zyl, Kirsten Bassuday, Rikus Goosen)

Best Exhibition 2011
Group 7 – Liquid Systems (Charl Kruger, Jaco Pretorius, Erik Potgieter, Wilna Rocher)

Overall 3rd Place 2011
Group 8 – Celerity (Ian Joubert, Maryke Nel, Katrin Vaskes, Devan Ellett)

Overall 2nd Place 2011

Overall 1st Place 2011
Group 5 – 3 Bits & a Byte (Janine Kleynhans, Noël Joubert, Noline Pieterse, Eunice Steyn)

The overall first-place winners, 3 Bits & a Byte, developed a scheduling and management system for their client, People 4 Performance. The client uses a paper-based system and all the company’s information is stored in cabinets and files that are sometimes difficult to organise. The scheduling system that was developed will convert all the client’s data to an electronic format, which will make it easy for the company to find and maintain information.

According to Eunice Steyn, a member of the winning group, their client is very impressed with the system and the group is pleased that their hard work has been rewarded.
