Anglo Operations Ltd has agreed to establish a Chair in Pyrometallurgy within the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Pretoria.

The main aim of the Anglo Chair in Pyrometallurgy is to maintain and strengthen competence in the field of pyrometallurgy, and to start a Centre of Excellence in Pyrometallurgy.  This Centre will be supported by industry and government to meet the needs of the pyrometallurgical industry, and to enable South Africa to compete on an international level in the field of pyrometallurgy.

Members of the Chair include (f.l.t.r. on the photo) Dr Lloyd Nelson (Head of Smelting and Refining Technology, Anglo Platinum Ltd), Mr Paul Dempsey (Group Head of Metallurgy, Anglo American plc), Prof Madeleine du Toit (Head Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering, UP), Prof Andrie Garbers-Craig (Anglo Chair in Pyrometallurgy, Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering, UP), Prof Roelf Sandenbergh (Dean of the Faculty of EBIT, UP) and Mr Danie Krige (Head of Metallurgy, Kumba Iron Ore).
