UP professor appointed to technical management board of the International Institute of Welding

At the 62nd Annual Assembly of the International Institute of Welding (IIW) held in Singapore on 12 to 17 July 2009, Prof Madeleine du Toit of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Pretoria was appointed as member of the Technical Management Board (TMB) of the IIW.
The TMB consists of six members appointed by the board of Directors and an additional six members elected by the sixteen working units of the International Institute of Welding. The TMB aims to initiate and develop best practices in welding and joining, to organise the exchange of scientific and technical information in the field of welding and joining, to oversee all technical aspects of IIW standardisation activities and to encourage a safe, healthy and environmentally friendly working environment for welding personnel. The TMB is also responsible for the IIW journal "Welding in the World", of which Prof Du Toit was re-appointed as member of the Editorial Board and Key Reviewer.
Prof Du Toit was also elected as vice-chairperson of Commission IX of the IIW. Commission IX "Behaviour of metals subjected to welding" is chaired by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Boellinghaus of Germany and is responsible for all IIW technical and standardisation activities related to welding metallurgy.
