Welcome to the Department of Sport and Leisure Studies
 
As from 1 March 2014 the Department of Biokinetics, Sport and Leisure Sciences in the Faculty of Humanities split into two separate academic departments. The Department of Sport and Leisure Studies has been established within the Faculty of Humanities, while academic disciplines of Biokinetics and Sport Science have moved to the Department of Physiology in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The BA Human Movement Science, BA Human Movement Science Option: Sport Psychology, BSportSci and BSportSci Option: Golf degrees, which were part of the previous Department of Biokinetics, Sport and Leisure Sciences in the Faculty of Humanities, will be housed in the new Department of Sport and Leisure Studies in the Faculty of Humanities, and phased out over a period as from 2014 (the last intake of first year students being January 2014).

The new Department of Sport and Leisure Studies will offer a BA Sport and Leisure Studies degree with four specialisation options.

With these options the department will endeavour to prepare students to work in the sport and leisure industry of South Africa, and abroad.

Commonwealth scholar at UP focuses on relationship between artwork and onlooker - 30/07/2014
Johan Thom, a prolific artist who has received numerous awards and is currently a lecturer in the University of Pretoria's Department of Fine Arts, will soon receive his PhD from the University College of London (UCL) through the Slade School of Art. Thom was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship by the Canon Collins Trust in 2008 and returned to South Africa last year, when he joined the staff at his alma mater as the coordinator for postgraduate students.

The Department of Economics hosted the first Economic Research Southern Africa (ERSA) Dynamic Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Modelling course during July 2014. The course was presented by Prof Peter Dixon and Prof Maureen Bleazby from the Centre of Policy Studies, now located at Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia.

UP now has a satellite health research facility in Thohoyandou, Limpopo! - 29/07/2014
The Department of Urology and the School of Health Systems and Public Health in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria (UP) have been performing human and environmental health research in the Vhembe district of the Limpopo province for the past twelve years. This National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)-funded study is a collaborative effort between Prof Brenda Eskenazi, who is the Director of the Center for Children's Environmental Health Research at the University of California, Berkeley Campus, San Francisco, USA, and Prof Riana Bornman of the Department of Urology at UP.

International association honours Prof Kobus Maree as distinguished psychologist - 25/07/2014
Professor Kobus Maree, professor in the Faculty of Education’s Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Pretoria (UP), was named a fellow of the International Association for Applied Psychology (IAAP) at its quadrennial international congress held in Paris during July. Some 4 500 psychologists from 100 countries attended the congress of this association founded in 1920.

TuksSport athletes taking part in the Commonwealth Games - 25/07/2014
The 2014 Commonwealth Games (officially the XX Commonwealth Games) are held in Glasgow, Scotland from 23 July to 3 August 2014. It is the third largest multi-sport event after the Olympics and the Asian Games, and it will be the largest multi-sport event ever held in Scotland. Around 4 560 athletes will be competing in 17 different sports.
