The international Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM) has been running since 2003. It is a Synthetic Biology competition where teams are given a kit of biological parts at the beginning of the summer from the Registry of Standard Biological Parts. Working at their own universities over the summer (SA winter), they use these parts, and new parts of their own design, to build biological systems and operate them in living cells.

ACGT partner Wits partook in the 2010 competition and were the first African team to do so. They did exceptionally well, returning with a bronze medal!

This year, ACGT partners Wits and CSIR have teamed up for the 2011 competition. Follow the links below for more information.

We are gauging interest around the iGEM competition from students from the Universities of Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Should you have an interest in the competition or require more information around iGEM, please contact Dr Karl Rumbold (Karl.Rumbold@wits.ac.za) or Dr John Becker (jbecker@csir.co.za) by 20 June 2011. An information session will subsequently be organized.
