Abstract:

Organic molecules may be combined with inorganic metal halides to form materials that are of technological interest and self-assemble at the nano-scale. Ionic hybrid materials retain the properties of the individual parts, including mechanical hardness, thermal stability, electronic and magnetic properties, fluorescence and luminescence.

Coordination compounds/polymers are formed when the organic molecules coordinate to the metal halide component, and related coordination polymers have interesting properties including non-linear optic behaviour and magnetic properties.

In the current investigation the effect of a change in one of three parameters on the crystal structures, packing, crystal engineering motifs and properties is studied.
