Prof E.K.H. Friedland

Prof Erich Karl Helmut Friedland is 'n buitengewone professor in die Universiteit van Pretoria se Departement Fisika en hoof vandie ioonstraal-ontledingsgroep. Hy het ook vanaf 1980 tot met sy aftrede in 1998 aan die hoof gestaan van UP se Departement Fisika. Hy is in Duitsland gebore, maar het na Suid-Afrika geëmmigreer, waarna hy in 1956 sy BSc-graad aan UP behaal het.Twee jaar later het hy sy MSc, en in 1965 sy PhD behaal. Hy het sy professionele loopbaan in 1952 by Yskor begin en was vanaf 1953 tot 1955 as wetenskaplike assistent by die Wetenskaplike Navorsings- en Nywerheidssraad (WNNR) werksaam. In 1956 is hy tot navorsingsassistent bevorder, waarna hy hom in 1957 as 'n tegnieseassistent by UP aangesluit het. In 1959 het hy die pos as dosent aanvaar, tot 1966, toe hy 'n jaar by die KFZ Karlsruhe as 'n gaswetenskaplike deurgebring het. Die volgende jaar het hy as 'n senior dosent na UP teruggekeer, totdat hy in 1972 as adjunkprofessor aangestel is. In 1974 het hy 'n pos by die Max-Planck-Instituut (MPI) Heidelberg aanvaar, en in 1979het hy weer na KFZ Karlsurhe as 'n gasnavorser gereis. Regdeur sy loopbaan het hy tyd by hierde instellings deurgebring. In 1980 is hy as hoof van die Departement Fisika by UPaangestel. Hy het op verskeie komitees en rade gedien, wat die Suid- Afrikaanse Fisika-instituut, die Stigting vir Wetenskapontwikkeling (SNO) se Evaluasiekomitee (Fisika), dieadvieskomitees van die SNO se Institusionele Navorsingsontwikkelingsprogram (IRDP) by die Universiteit van die Noorde, die Mediese Universiteit van Suid-Afrika (Medunsa) endie Universiteit van die Transkei (Unitra), om ‘n paar te noem, insluit. Prof Friedland was skrywer of medeskrywer van 75 artikels, wat in sowel wetenskaplike as algemene tydskrifte gepubliseer is.

Prof Erich Karl Helmut Friedland is an extraordinary professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Pretoria (UP)and head of the Ion Beam Analysis Group. He also headed UP’s Department of Physics from 1980 until his retirement in 1998. He was born in Germany, but immigrated to South Africa where he completed his BSc degree at UP in 1956. Two years later, hereceived his MSc and in 1965 his PhD. He started his professional career in 1952 at Iscor and from 1953 to 1955 he worked as a scientific assistant at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). In 1956, he was promoted to research assistantand in 1957 joined UP as a technical assistant. In 1959 he accepted a position as a lecturer until 1966 when he spent a year at the KFZ Karlsruhe as a guest scientist. He returned to UP the following year as a senior lecturer and in 1972 was appointed asassociate professor. In 1974, he accepted a position at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) Heidelberg and in 1979 he returned to the KFZ Karlsruhe as a guest researcher. Throughout his career he continued to spend time at these institutions. In 1980 he wasappointed as head of the Departement of Physics at UP. He serves or served on various committees and boards, including the South African Institute of Physics, the Foundation of Research Development (FRD) Evaluation Committee (Physics), the FRDInstitutional Research Development Programme (IRDP) Advisory Committee of the University of the North, Medical University of South Africa (Medunsa) and University of Transkei (Unitra) to name but a few. Friedland authored or co-authored 75 articles,published in both scientific and popular journals.
