Prof H.J. Viljoen

Prof Hendrik J Viljoen is die Willa Cather buitengewone professor in chemiese en biomolekulêre ingenieurswese aan die Universiteit van Nebraska-Lincoln in die Verenigde State van Amerika (VSA). Hy was voorheen verbonde aan die Universiteitvan Pretoria se Fakulteit Ingenieurswese, Bou-omgewing en Inligtingtegnologie. Prof Viljoen maak gebruik van wiskundige modelle om in-diepte ondersoeke te doen oor komplekse prosesse. Op die gebied vanbiomolekulêre ingenieurswese, word sy werk oor die kinetika en getrouheid van DNA-polimerases, termiese beskadiging van DNA en die polimerase-kettingreaksie gebruik omkoste-effektiewe, kliniektegnologië te ontwikkel om vorms van verskillende organismes te diagnoseer, insluitende mikobacterium tuberculosis, wat weerstand bied teengeneesmiddels. Hy is ook betrokke by navorsing oor megano-chemie, asook teoretiese en eksperimentele studies oor nie-ekwilibrium gebeure wat plaasvind wanneer groothoeveelhede elastiese en chemiese potensiële energie vrygestel word. Prof Viljoen het sy BSc-graad (Chem Ing) in 1979, sy MSc-graad (Chem Ing) in 1981 en sy DSc-graad(Toegepaste Wiskunde) in 1985 by UP behaal. Hy is ‘n lid van die American Institute of Chemical Engineers en het reeds verskeie pryse en toekennings vir sy navorsing ontvang,insluitende die silwer medalje van die Suid-Afrikaanse Instituut vir Chemiese Ingenieurs, die National Research Foundation (NRF) se Presidentstoekenning, die Navorser van die Jaar-toekenning van Stellenbosch Universiteit en die Multi-dissiplinêre Navorsingstoekenning van die Universiteit van Nebraska-Lincoln. Sy publikasies sluit verskeie hoofstukke inboeke, twee patente en ‘n groot hoeveelheid artikels in geakkrediteerde vaktydskrifte,aanbiedings by konferensies, asook verskeie navorsings- en konsultasie-verslae in. /sitefiles/Image/leading_minds/viljoen.jpg 
   
 Prof Hendrik J Viljoen is the Willa Cather distinguished professor in chemical and biomolecular engineering at the Universityof Nebraska-Lincoln in the United States of America (USA). He was formerly a professor in the Faculty of Engineering, BuiltEnvironment and Information Technology at the University of Pretoria. Prof Viljoen uses mathematical models to gain a deeperunderstanding of complex processes. In the field of biomolecular engineering, his work on the kinetics and fidelity of DNA polymerases, thermal damage of DNA and the polymerase chain reaction is used in the development of cost-effective, point-of-care technology to diagnose different drug-resistant strains of various organisms, including mycobacterium tuberculosis. Anotherarea of research is mechano-chemistry. Theoretical and experimental studies are conducted to gain a better understanding ofthe non-equilibrium events that occur during the sudden release of large amounts of elastic and chemical potential energy. Prof Viljoen completed his BSc (Chem Eng) in 1979, his MSc (Chem Eng) in 1981 and his DSc (Applied Mathematics) in1985 at UP. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Prof Viljoen has received various awards for hisresearch including the silver medal from the South African Institute of Chemical Engineers, the National Research Foundation(NRF) President’s Award for excellence in research, the Researcher of the Year Award from the University of Stellenbosch and the Multidisciplinary Research Award from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Publications include several book chapters,two patents and numerous papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, presentations at conferences and many research andconsulting reports.
