Van Heerden, WFP

Prof Willem Francois Petrus van Heerden is hoof van die Universiteit van Pretoria se Departement Mondpatologie en Mondbiologie. Hy het sy BChD-graad (Tandheelkunde) in 1981 aan UP voltooi, gevolg deur sy MChD (Mondpatologie) (cum laude) in 1988. Tien jaar later voltooi hy sy PhD (Mondpatologie) by die Mediese Universiteit van Suid-Afrika (Medunsa) en in 2003 sy DSc (Odont) aan UP. Hy word ook verkies as ‘n genoot in die Kollege van Patologie van Suid-Afrika. Ná voltooiing van sy BChD-graad meld hy aan vir verpligte militêre diensplig wat hy voltooi by die Maphuta-L Malatji Hospitaal in Phalaborwa, Limpopo Provinsie. Hy klaar in 1983 uit en aanvaar ‘n posisie as tandarts in Engeland. In 1985 keer hy terug na Suid-Afrika as kliniese assistent in Mondpatologie by UP. In 1989 word hy aangestel as spesialis en senior lektor in die Departement Mondpatologie by Medunsa. Hy word ook aangestel as forensiese odontologiese konsultant in die huidige Noord-Wes provinsie. In 1990 word hy bevorder tot senior spesialis en die daaropvolgende jaar ontvang hy sy professorskap. In 1993 word hy bevorder tot eerste spesialis. Hy sluit in 1996 as hoof by UP se Departement van Mondpatologie en Mondbiologie aan, ‘n posisie wat hy tans nog bekleë. Prof Van Heerden dien in verskeie nasionale en internasionale professionele komitees. Hy het ook op die uitvoerende raad van die Internasionale Vereniging van Mondpatoloë gedien as verteenwoordiger van Afrika. Hy het reeds verskeie pryse en toekennings vir sy navorsing ontvang insluitende as ‘n Uitnemende Akademiese Presteerder by UP sedert 2000 en het ook twee Onderwys Innovasie-toekennings van die Universiteit ontvang. In 2005 word hy verkies tot die Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAF). Prof Van Heerden is lid van ‘n internasionale groep van kundiges wat die standardisering van opleiding vir mondpatoloë ondersoek. Hy is die outeur of mede-outeur van meer as 120 artikels in wetenskaplike en populêre joernale en het ook ‘n CD-ROM getiteld Maxillofacial Pathology ontwikkel.

Prof Willem Francois Petrus van Heerden is head of the University of Pretoria’s Department of Oral Pathology and Oral Biology. He completed his BChD (Dentistry) degree at UP in 1981, followed by his MChD (Oral Pathology) (cum laude) in 1988. Ten years later, he completed his PhD (Oral Pathology) at the Medical University of South Africa (Medunsa), and in 2003 his DSc (Odont) at UP. He was also elected as a fellow of the College of Pathology of South Africa. Upon completion of his BChD degree, he reported for compulsory military service, which he completed at the Maphuta-L Malatji Hospital in Phalaborwa, Limpopo Province. He was discharged in 1983 and accepted a position as a dentist in England. In 1985, he returned to South Africa as a clinical assistant in Oral Pathology at UP. In 1989, he was appointed as a specialist and senior lecturer in the Department of Oral Pathology at Medunsa. He was also appointed as a forensic odontological consultant in the current North West. In 1990, he was promoted to senior specialist and received his professorship the following year. In 1993, he was promoted to first specialist. He joined UP in 1996 as head of UP’s Department of Oral Pathology and Oral Biology, a position that he still holds. Prof Van Heerden serves on various national and international professional committees. He also served as African representative on the executive council of the International Association of Oral Pathologists. He has already received various prizes and awards for his research, including UP’s Exceptional Achiever Award since 2000. He also received the University’s Education Innovation Award on two occasions. In 2005, he was elected to the Academy of Science of South Africa. Prof Van Heerden is a member of an international group of specialists who are investigating the standardisation of training for oral pathologists. He is the author or co-author of more than 120 articles in scientific and popular journals and also developed a CD-ROM entitled Maxillofacial Pathology.
