Honeybees dance and thereby communicate the distance and direction of a food source to fellow nest mates - one of the few examples of language use by non-mammals. They not only communicate, they can also count up to four and solve optimisation problems of which the hexagonal structure of the wax cells is an example.

Girls visit Maths Department

Six girls from neighbouring schools had the opportunity to visit the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics on 29 May 2014 as part of the annual Take a Girl Child to Work Day initiative. The girls were given the opportunity to have hands-on experience of academic life at a university, discuss career options and have lunch with some members of the Department.
