Mathematics Midwinter Morning: Honeybees and how they use mathematics

Honeybees dance and thereby communicate the distance and direction of a food source to fellow nest mates - one of the few examples of language use by non-mammals. They not only communicate, they can also count up to four and solve optimisation problems of which the hexagonal structure of the wax cells is an example.

Maths students visit National Laser Centre at the CSIR

On 25 October 2013, the Crypto Giants had a scheduled visit to the National Laser Centre of the CSIR. The aim was to see firsthand the research done in their Mathematical Optics group. The visit was very productive in terms of gaining a general idea of what the practical aspects of mathematics theory are in the real world. In addition, students were able to see how a research environment functioned and how new technology are developed.

The Sign of Honour of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was awarded to Prof Lubuma from the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, University of Pretoria.

He was honoured for his contribution to the development and strengthening of the research collaboration between the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the University of Pretoria and in particular for his contribution to the organization of the International Conference on Mathematical Methods and Models in Biosciences (BIOMATH).

Early Spring Mathematics Morning with Grandmaster Kevin Horsley

The Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics welcomed the long anticipated change in weather with its Early Spring Mathematics Morning at the start of August.

This is the seventh such annual event where the Department opens its doors to visitors from all over and invite a speaker that appeals to all. This year’s outstanding speaker was Grandmaster Kevin Horsley, an expert on memorization techniques, and someone who is able to recite the first ten thousand digits of the number pi. His topic "You are a lot smarter than you think" attracted wide interest and the packed audience was entertained, informed and delighted.

Prof Jean Lubuma: Exceptional Academic Achiever

At a function on 24 April, the University of Pretoria has recognised Professor Lubuma for the third time as Exceptional Achiever (2013-2015). At the same occasion Professor Lubuma was also awarded a certificate for his contribution to the research standing of the University after achieving a B2 rating from the NRF.
