This year’s eagerly anticipated Faculty of Health Sciences’ Research Day at the University of Pretoria (UP) was an eclectic mix of research, education and innovation. The event afforded researchers, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students from UP the opportunity to present their research findings to the Faculty. Participants presented their endeavours in the form of oral and/or poster presentations.
UP Head of Nuclear Medicine honoured for extending frontiers of medicine

Professor Mike Sathekge, Head of Nuclear Medicine at Steve Biko Academic Hospital and Head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the University of Pretoria (UP), has been selected as the winner in the category Fellowship in the Arts and Science of Medicine of the SAMA-Bonitas Housecall Doctors Awards for 2014. The aim of the SAMA awards is to recognise the outstanding achievements of public and private sector doctors in their respective fields.
UP part of African initiative to solve an African problem – malaria

The African Consortium for Malaria Vaccine Research was established at a symposium on Malaria Vaccine Studies in Africa in Accra, Ghana on 25 July. The University of Pretoria (UP) is one of the founding members of the consortium and will start working on funding proposals with the other consortium members.
UP now has a satellite health research facility in Thohoyandou, Limpopo!

The Department of Urology and the School of Health Systems and Public Health in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria (UP) have been performing human and environmental health research in the Vhembe district of the Limpopo province for the past twelve years. This National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)-funded study is a collaborative effort between Prof Brenda Eskenazi, who is the Director of the Center for Children's Environmental Health Research at the University of California, Berkeley Campus, San Francisco, USA, and Prof Riana Bornman of the Department of Urology at UP.
Faculty of Health Sciences’ research in Limpopo paves the road for exciting collaborations on prostate cancer

The Department of Urology and School of Health Systems and Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pretoria (UP) have been instrumental in the health research being done in the Vhembe district in the Limpopo province for the past twelve years. The presence of UP in the Thohoyandou area has led to a collaborative partnership with a globally recognised access programme, PHAKAMISA, that aims to directly impact on the outcomes achieved with treating and caring for patients suffering from cancer and on the needs of those managing this dreaded disease. This will include support to health care providers as well as prostate cancer patients.
