The 15th Congress of the Afrikaanse Letterkundevereniging (ALV) will be held in Pretoria from 25 to 27 September. This year’s biennial Congress will be hosted by UNISA’s Department of Afrikaans and Literary Theory. Several members of UP’s Department of Afrikaans will present papers.
The ALV Congress, which is the only congress for students of literature involved in research on Afrikaans literature, is attended by experts from across South Africa and Namibia, the Netherlands and Poland.
The theme of this year’s congress is “Discourses on South Africa”. Subthemes that will be examined during the different sessions include accounts of travels in Africa, the fictional construction of travelling in narrative texts, place, memory and identity, and the Afrikaans writer as a public intellectual. There will also be presentations dealing with new Afrikaans authors and the state of the teaching of literature at South African tertiary institutions.
Students and members of the public are welcome to attend the congress. Feel free to contact the organisers via the congress website: www.unisa.ac.za/alv2012.
