Professor G.J. (Jakes) Gerwel (66) passed away on Wednesday, 28 November 2012. He was a professor in Afrikaans literature, erstwhile rector of the University of the Western-Cape and the first post-1994 director-general in the office of President Nelson Mandela. After his retirement he served on the boards of several scientific and business institutions. Since 2003 he was an honorary professor in the Department of Afrikaans at the University of Pretoria.

Tydskrif vir Letterkunde turns 75!

Professor Hein Willemse of the Department of Afrikaans at UP has been the editor of the literary journal Tydskrif vir Letterkunde since 2003. The journal's 75th birthday was celebrated on the 8th of September 2011 with a small function held in the Merensky library. It is not only the oldest literary journal in South Africa, but on the African continent.

Afrikaans Honours student attends Summer School in the Netherlands

The 55th summer course on Dutch language and culture, presented by the Dutch Language Union, was held in Zeist from 19 July to 7 August and attended by 141 participants from 30 countries. Three students represented South Africa, one of which was Shaun de Jager, an honours student of the Department of Afrikaans at UP.

Breyten Breytenbach visits UP as guest of the Department of Afrikaans

Professor Willie Burger, head of the Department of Afrikaans, was instrumental in bringing the renowned Afrikaans poet and artist, Breyten Breytenback, to the University of Pretoria campus on Friday the 5th of March. Breyten did not deliver a formal lecture, but answered questions and spoke freely on various topics in conversation with prof. Burger. The venue was the Musaion on the main campus.
