Voices of former Tukkies immortalised in special volume
Posted on 17 November 2008
On Wednesday, 12 November 2008, the launch of Amfiteater. Skrywerstemme van oud-Tukkies took place in the Merensky Library. This volume commemorates the centenary of the University of Pretoria in the form of more than twenty creative contributions by Tuks alumni of several generations.
The volume was compiled by Prof Piet Roodt, emeritus professor in the Department of Afrikaans. It was published in collaboration with Protea Book House.
Contributors to the volume who attended the occasion included Professor of Theology and published poet Cas Vos, author and publisher Jeanette Ferreira, poet Johann Lodewyk Marais, performing artist Karin Hougaard and former conductor of the Tukkie Choir Petru Gräbe. At this occasion, Prof Hein Willemse, head of the Department of Afrikaans at UP, Mr Neil Cochrane (on behalf of Prof Piet Roodt) en Jeanette Ferreira spoke about the creation of this special publication. Adv Marius Ackermann (one of the contributors) reminisced about his years at Tuks, and homage was paid to the author and poet George Weideman, who passed away recently and whose poem “Student” appears in Amfiteater. Prof. Cas Vos read Weideman's striking poem as an appropriate end to the formal proceedings.
The volume will be available at the Centenary Shop, Main Campus, University of Pretoria, and at certain bookshops.
