Demonstrations of tele-audiology equipment
A special seminar and demonstration for hearing healthcare professionals in Sweden was presented in collaboration with the University of Pretoria.
The seminar held on 18 September in the city of Falun, Sweden, included live demonstrations of patients tested remotely from Sweden to South Africa and vice-versa (For YouTube videos - Sweden to SA and SA to Sweden).
Prof De Wet Swanepoel from the Dept of Communication Pathology at the University of Pretoria presented on tele-audiology in collaboration with the organizers of the meeting, Prof Claude Laurent from Umeå University in Sweden and Ms Lisbeth Olsson from Falun Hospital. The seminar was a follow-up to the recent collaborative project establishing two tele-audiology clinics in Kenya. The device used to conduct the remote testing was the KUDUwave audiometer by GeoAxon and a video-otoscope.
Tele-audiology clinics may offer a way to provide hearing healthcare in Africa and other developing world regions where hearing healthcare professionals are often almost entirely unavailable.
Local Swedish press reported on this special event.
