Clubs and groups of choice for all Alumni

The new year is the ideal opportunity to explore new ventures and to make new friends. TuksAlumni offers graduates ample opportunities to meet at a social level and to forge ties of friendship through its many interest groups and clubs, which cater for all tastes.
TuksClub 60+
This club is home to Alumni over the age of 60 and presents regular monthly events. As usual, the club kicked off the new year with its annual general meeting and braai on the spit, which was held on Valentine’s Day at the Uitspan terrain. Other highlights on the calendar include:
  • 16 April, 29 May, 25 June and 14 August - Cultural visits
  • 14 to 19 September              Visit: Satara, Kruger National Park
  • 8 October                                Sports day and Spring Lunch
  • 6 November                            End of year function
The club is also involved in the community through the outreach action of the University’s Department of Communication Pathology, which assists toddlers with communication problems, as well as their caregivers. Membership fees are R50 per annum.

TuksAlumni Caravan Club
In celebration of the University’s centenary, the club arranged an excursion open to all former students – whether they are club members or not – over the long weekend from 25 to 28 April at the El Rancho Grande Resort close to Bela-Bela (Warmbad) at the discounted rate of only R100 per night per caravan.
There are also five chalets available to those who choose not to camp out. Highlights on the calendar for 2008 are:

 The club was founded in 1987 and is currently active mainly in Gauteng. Each month, it undertakes weekend excursions to camping sites within easy reach. No formal activities are presented, and members and their families are encouraged to use the opportunity to relax and reconnect.

TuksAlumni Roadrunners Club
This club for running Alumni endeavours to promote excellence and healthy competition in road running. The club participates in races across the country. A new committee under the guidance of Danie van Wyk aims to put the club in the spotlight again this year. The highlight of their calendar, the annual road race, has been moved forward from September to 31 May to coincide with the University’s centenary celebrations.
The legend that will be honoured this year is well-known long-distance runner, Johan Fourie. Membership is R250 per annum and families are eligible for discounts. 
TuksAlumni Golf Club
This active club boasts more as 350 members and provides Alumni with the opportunity to forge ties through the sport and to support their Alma Mater. Regular competitions against other universities are presented. Membership is R250 per annum.

Mission: To offer all alumni who play golf the opportunity to strengthen their bonds with their alma mater through this sport.


To get alumni involved through the activities of the Golf Club.

To organise golf competitions, championships and events between members themselves and against other clubs or organisations.

To raise funds for the effective management of the club and its activities, to invest funds that are not needed immediately, and to utilise such funds for worthy causes - such as bursaries - in the future.

To promote golf as a sport amongst UP students.

To encourage club members to promote and adhere to the rules, traditions and etiquette of the sport at all times.

To allocate bursaries to deserving students annually.

TuksAlumni Singles Club 
This social club for singles was formerly known as EensTuks. Regular social meetings are presented.
The next function will be a Bring-and-Braai and Dance at Uitspan on 15 March 2008. The cost is R30 per person.  Kindly reserve you place with Tjaart at Cell 082 6748151.

Tuks Dance Sport Group
This group presents their activities in collaboration with the Tuks Student Dance Sport Club. Classes for Alumni are presented on Tuesday evenings at 19:30 in the Springbok Hall at the LC de Villiers Sportgrounds and the costs amount to R40 per class with an annual registration fee of R200. TuksAlumni Wine Guild
The meetings of this group have proved to be extremely popular and the Valentines’ Dinner on 14 February at Eat@UP had guests enthralled once again. At this romantic event, guests were treated to wines and chocolate by Bilton and enjoyed cuisine with exotic names such as Parfait de foie gras et de vollailes and Mole Pollo de Guajalote.
The next function will be a Centenary Wine and Cheese on 9 May 2008 at the Edoardo Villa Museum on the Hatfield Campus.

New initiatives - Groups for young Alumni and young parents
New initiatives that are being launched include a group for young Alumni and young parents. The Alumni Office will offer guidance to establish the groups, but it needs dynamic Alumni who are willing and eager to take these actions further.
