Castor Semenya's silver and Bridgitte Hartley’s bronze medals helped Team SA achieve its best performance at the Olympic Games since 1996.

Caster Semenya came second and won a silver medal in the 800m women's race, while Bridgitte Hartley scooped the bronze medal in the women's K1 500m event.

Summary:
Cameron van der Burgh and Chad le Clos scooped gold medals in swimming, with James Thompson, John Smith, Matthew Brittain and Sizwe Ndlovu doing the same in rowing. Chad le Clos then won silver in the butterfly, with Caster Semenya doing the same in the 800m, while Bridgitte Hartley secured a bronze in the canoe sprint.

SA bagged six medals and were ranked 24th out of a total of 67 participating countries as per the Olympic Medal Standings. In Africa, Team SA occupied the top spot. This is a great improvement on the one silver we got in Beijing.

Marc Mundell has set a new African record in the men’s 50km walking race, as he finished 32nd overall in a time of 3:55.32. Mundell is the first South African male to walk in the 50km event since the country's return to the Olympics at Barcelona in 1992.
