Andrea Steyn - untouchable

SA Duathlon Andrea Steyn was untouchable on Sunday 2 August at the 6th Momentum Health Teavigo Duathlon race in Kromdraai, close to Hartebeespoort.

Steyn, a physiotherapist at the Olympic Training Centre – the HPC in Pretoria, had rested her calf niggle for the last two weeks, not even going for training. Clearly the rest paid dividend, as she was once again left to race the men. Only Su Don Wauchope was able to stay with her on the first 5km run leg. The two entered the transition together, but a super fast transition by Steyn – by now her trademark – saw her get away from Don-Wauchope onto the 30km bike leg.

It wasn’t the easiest of courses, undulating and breezy with the weather not knowing if it should be cold or warm up, but Steyn went into typical time trial mode and was gone. The final 2.5km run proved to be a doddle for Steyn. Su Don-Wauchope finished almost 2minutes behind, with a surprise 3rd coming in the form of Natasha Gorrie.

Andrea Steyn, with 4 out of six victories, is sitting on 118 points in the Series, her nearest rival Nadia Pretorius on 90 points.
