LtR: Sean White, Boipelo Montwedi, Callan Hall
Three of TuksSport High School's learners took part in the Northers Junior Squash Association (NJSA) Round Robin from 4 to 6 February. They are Sean White (u19); Boipelo Montwedi (u16 girls) and Callan Hall (u14 boys).
Sean White, a grade 12 learner, had two personal best wins during the tournament securing his position in the Provincial A team. Sean has battled to compete at the level that he is capable of, but this weekend saw it all come together and he worked hard, stayed calm and executed his game plan beautifully to beat the Meyer brothers. Both these opponents have been seeded above Sean for quite some time and Sean has finally played into the position he should be.
Callan, a grade 8 learner, was seeded number 1 for the tournament and played well throughout the opening rounds – not dropping a game until the finals. In the final round, the tough Academy programme got the better of him and he found himself down by two games to love. Fighting exhaustion and clawing his way back into the game, Callan managed to get to get the score to 2-2 in games and narrowly lost the final game 11-9.
Although Callan ended second in this provincial tournament, his rankings as the u14 number 1 should not be affected as he is still 2-1 up in matches against his rival Nico Ras.
Boipelo Montwedi, grade 10 learner, unfortunately had to withdraw from the event due to a bout of flu.
