Tuks student, Carlyn Fischer, sponsored by the High Performance Centre’s (hpc) Sport Science and Medical Unit, got her season off to an excellent start when she won the women’s title at the 2012 Cape Town ITU Sprint Triathlon African Cup on Sunday, 19 February.
"At the age of six, I started cross-country running, which led to athletics and swimming. I did my first triathlon at the age of 11, winning bronze at my second ever triathlon, our National Champs. I continued to do many other sports: cycling, biathle, biathlon, pentathlon, aquathlon, duathlon, hockey and modern dancing. After receiving national colours and winning South African titles in seven sports, I eventually had to make a choice when I was 17 and I chose triathlon. I competed in my first ITU race in 2009, the same year I started my full-time studies towards an LLB degree."
