Welcome to the official web page of the Department of English at the University of Pretoria. We offer a wide range of courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in addition to a number of short courses. Join us for a journey through some of the greatest literature ever written, and embark on the adventure of using the most dynamic language in the world.

Our staff include well-known and published researchers and authors such as Andries Wessels, David Medalie and Russell West-Pavlov. Other staff members include Molly Brown, Patrick Lenahan, Marc Botha, Antony Goedhals, Kulukazi Soldati-Kahimbaara, Idette Noomé, Tatjana Pavlov-West, Bonnie Kneen, Georg Nöffke, Retha Knoetze, Antoinette Pretorius, and Michelle Joubert. We were recently joined by Farah Ismail, Fiona Covarr and Dewald Steyn. A regular visiting professor is world-renowned scholar Anthony Chennells.

A few of the many specialised areas of research in which our members of staff and postgraduate students are engaged include African and South African literature, literature of the Renaissance and the eighteenth century, modernism and early twentieth-century literature, language studies (including language policy, editing, TESOL, creative writing, applied language studies and translation studies), children's and youth literature, science fiction, Irish literature and colonial literature.

Our Professors emeritus are Peter Titlestad and Rosemary Gray.
