Department of Financial Management

Message from Prof Henco van Schalkwyk

The Department of Financial Management at the University of Pretoria is unique in its composition, combining the full range of academic offering in Corporate Finance, Management accounting, and Investment Management. Since its inception in 2002, the Department has distinguished itself as a leader in finance education and preferred provider of suitably qualified graduates to industry.

The Department is responsible for the Financial Management component of the education of prospective Chartered Accountants which is comprised of Corporate Finance and Management Accounting. In this endeavour, it prides itself in providing Auditing firms, and ultimately the financial industry, with candidates who have the ability to apply the knowledge that they gained.

The BCom Investment Management degree offered by the Department is aimed at students who ultimately want to obtain the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation. In 2006, the Department of Financial Management was the first at a South African University to become a Programme Partner of CFA Institute®.

The Department also offers the BCom in Financial Management Sciences degree that leads to a BCom Honours degree in the same field of specialisation. Students pursuing this course of study can also, at a later stage, qualify as internationally qualified Chartered Management Accountants with CIMA or as South African Public Accountants through SAIPA.

The Department is also proud to offer Financial Management as a service subject to students studying other degrees in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, as well as students studying in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and IT.

At Master’s degree level we offer the unique and highly regarded MCom Financial Management Sciences degree by coursework where students complete three modules via telematic instruction as well as a mini-dissertation. The degree can also be obtained by completing a full dissertation on an approved topic.

At Doctoral level, qualifying candidates can either attempt a DCom or PhD in Financial Management Sciences by completing a thesis.

The Department has a contingent of 23 dedicated lecturers that are all highly qualified with a mix of practical and teaching experience.

We have confidence in our diverse programme offering and look forward to welcoming you as a student in our Department.
