Tuks Rowing is a relatively new club having started at the beginning of 2003. This club is one of the fastest growing Sports clubs and has been very successful in a short space of time.
We welcome both novice students and experienced rowers. We pride ourselves on our dominance of the novice races (which complements our efforts at higher levels).
The sprint season involves 2000m sprint (Olympic distance) races in all boat classes. It starts in January and ends in May with the South African Championships. The Boatrace season (in which only Universities take place) is from May to September. This is training for a single event, the universities boatrace that is a 4.2 km race for woman and a 6.2 km race for men in coxed eight boats. It takes place in Port Alfred in early September.
Ethical Research Workshop - 25/08/2014
On 18 August 2014, Professor Stephanie Burton, Vice-Principal for Research and Postgraduate Education at UP, hosted a seminar focusing on ethically responsible research. The theme of the seminar was ‘Human research participants and the ethically responsible advancement of science’. A paper was presented at the event by Dr Felice J Levine, Executive Director of the American Educational Research Association.
Two UP staff members elected to SABCP board - 25/08/2014
Two staff members from UP’s Department of Pharmacology have been elected to the board of the South African Society for Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (SASBCP). Prof Vanessa Steenkamp, who currently oversees the Phytomedicine unit in the department, was elected as Vice-President of the society and Dr André Marais, a senior lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology, was elected as treasurer.
Is SA business ready for the 21st century? - 22/08/2014
Prof Lorenzo Fioramonti, the director of the Centre for the Study of Governance Innovation at the University of Pretoria, commented on the Corporate Governance Index 2014 recently released by the Centre in partnership with the Institute of Internal Auditors of South Africa, saying that it provides a worrying snapshot of the state of business performance in our country. The Index finds that the leadership skills, accountability and overall conduct of public and private corporations have worsened over the past year.
Celebrating 15 years of music therapy training at UP - 21/08/2014
On Saturday 16 August the Music Therapy Unit of the Department of Music hosted a vibrant celebration to showcase the work of current students, past graduates and staff members. This event was held to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Music Therapy training at the University of Pretoria. The UP MMus (Music Therapy) training programme is the only master’s training programme of its kind on the African continent.
UP food scientist receives international award for leadership in his field - 21/08/2014
Dr Patrick Njage of the Department of Food Science at UP and postdoctoral fellow of the Institute for Food, Nutrition and Well-being (IFNuW), was a recipient of the International Union of Food Science and Technology's (IUFoST) Young Scientist Award for 2014. Alongside seven other outstanding young food scientists from across the world, Njage received the award at the IUFoST’s 17th World Congress of Food Science and Technology (World Food Congress), held in Montreal, Canada from 17 to 21 August.
