1. Animal Use and Care Committee (AUCC):

 The AUCC, a subcommittee of the Committee for Research Ethics and Integrity of the University of Pretoria reports to its Senate Committee for Research. Faculties that are represented on the AUCC are i.e. Veterinary Science, Health Sciences and Natural and Agricultural Sciences and other faculties using animals for teaching as well as research purposes.
Other Institutes that are represented on the Committee of the AUCC include:
- UP Biomedical Research Centre (UPBRC)
- Law Faculty
- National SPCA
Mandate of the AUCC:
- To ensure that the use of experimental animals is necessary
- The number of animals used is reduced to a minimum
- That unnecessary suffering of the animals is excluded and their well-being ensured
- The National Code of welfare standards for each species is maintained.
Secondary goal of the AUCC:
To protect the University and its faculties as well as the researchers from possible legal action. In order to achieve these goals all projects involving experimental animals have to be submitted to and approved by the AUCC before it may proceed.
PS: The use of animals for teaching purposes is also screened and approved on an annual basis and should be submitted to the AUCC. |

The Ethics Committee monitors the ethical nature of research and teaching undertaken in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences in respect of animals used for teaching and experimentation, biotechnology and genetic engineering, human subjects in research as an individual person, a group or a community; occupational hazards and biohazards, which may impact on man, animal and plant life and the environment. |

Application for Ethics approval at the University of Pretoria is extremely important in order to protect the university and its faculties as well as the researchers from possible legal action.
